The first fortified stone wall with towers and gates was erected round the town in the first quarter of the 13th century. A second wall was built about 100 years later. The fortifications of the town were severely damaged in the 30 Years’ War which lasted from 1608 to 1648. The walls could only be provisionally repaired and thus lost the characteristic appearance they once gave the town. However, they defined the outer limits of the town until the 19th century. Originally there were more than 20 towers protecting the wall, today only 8 remain. These still show the lines of fortification. The photo gallery shows various locations where remnants of the walls are still in evidence.
