St Mary’s is the hallmark of Gelnhausen. The citizens of Gelnhausen lovingly refer to it as “the Crown Jewel of God”. It has been the main ecclesiastical building since the town was founded. A small church had stood here from the mid 12th century. This developed rapidly into a magnificent building reflecting the growing wealth of Gelnhausen. Its style is characterized by the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. The interior is of great artistic value, especially the early Gothic sandstone rood screen with its depiction of the Last Judgement.
