The palace was erected on the orders of Emperor Frederick I “Barbarossa”, the founder of Gelnhausen. It was built on an island in the river Kinzig at the foot of his new town. It is considered the best preserved Staufer Dynasty palace. The Emperor’s decision to establish a palatinate in Gelnhausen resulted from its economic situation and accessibility. The palace’s thick walls are supported by a grid of about 12000 oak piles. The massive gateway, the well preserved window arches and the magnificent capitals still bear witness to the excellent quality of the Romanesque builders.
