The Narrowest Point is in Pfarrgasse
The medieval network of highways had a number of particularly important routes joining cities. The trading route from Frankfurt to Leipzig was one of these. It was part of the main corridor across Europe from Santiago di Compostella in Spain to Kiew. Gelnhausen was the first station on the route from Frankfurt, a day’s journey distant. Although this street was originally wide, in the late Middle Ages buildings had so far encroached on it that Pfarrgasse became the narrowest point on way between the two cities. This point determined the maximum size of loads.
