A large part of the land in medieval towns was owned by the church and its organisations. This was also the case in Gelnhausen. Besides the large churches, medieval Gelnhausen had two monasteries and numerous monastic establishments. In these guests were accommodated, goods traded and possessions administrated. An important reason for this was the site of the town on the Frankfurt to Leipzig trading route.
