The fountain on Obermarkt, the Upper Market Place, was not part of the medieval water supply. It is a modern architectural decoration from 2002 designed by the Gelnhausen artist Achim Gogler. Stylised towers on the fountain symbolise the six parts of Gelnhausen and the relative sizes of the towers indicate sizes of the suburbs.
In former times a pipe brought water from the Steinbrunnen or Stone Well to a trough on the Upper Market Place.
Gelnhausen was founded in 1170 by Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa
